Halifax’s iconic ‘Chefs for UNICEF Water for Life Gala’ celebrates its 28th year supporting the world’s vulnerable children
HALIFAX, January 13, 2020 – Nova Scotia’s top culinary talent is coming together for the 28th annual Chefs for UNICEF Water for Life Gala at the Halifax Convention Centre, an evening of fun and delicious international cuisine in support of UNICEF’s work to provide access to safe water and sanitation systems for children in Uganda.
The Gala aims to raise $310,000 for UNICEF Canada to fund a project that is helping 210,000 adolescent girls in the most marginalized communities in Uganda stay in school by providing piped water and separate latrines and wash facilities.
“Investing in water and hygiene facilities at schools provides a huge payoff both in terms of keeping children healthy and ensuring adolescent girls can continue with secondary education, greatly reducing the risk of early marriage and motherhood,” says Colin MacDonald, Chairman of Clearwater Seafoods Inc. and the Gala’s Honorary Chair. “No matter where they are growing up, every child has the right to a childhood.”
This year’s keynote speaker is Taban Shoresh, a women’s rights activist who supports girls and women affected by conflict and displacement. She will share her story as a 4-year-old narrowly escaping with her life as she and her family fled Iraq during the war with Iran.
The continued generosity of the people of Halifax has made the UNICEF Water for Life Gala one of the charity’s most important fundraising events in North America. In addition to the region’s top chef’s donating their time and creative energy, the event relies on a dedicated team of volunteers.
“The region’s finest chefs are working side by side to create tantalizing interpretations of international cuisines and cement the Chefs for UNICEF Water for Life Gala’s reputation as the food event of the season,” says Sean Doucet, General Manager of Hotel Halifax + The Barrington Hotel and Lead Chef for the Gala. “And it’s all to support an incredible cause -- helping vulnerable children reach their potential.”
