Manager, Development (Major Gifts)
(Full-time, Permanent; Flexible-Hybrid; based in Calgary)
The Development Manager (Major Gifts) works with the Development team to identify, support and cultivate donor relationships to meet the fiscal revenue goals in a manner consistent with UNICEF Canada’s mission and vision. With a focus on recruiting, stewarding and renewing individual donors for continued growth of the Major Gifts portfolio, this role manages and is responsible for donor relationships associated with more than $1million dollars in donor commitments annually.
Because of the regional focus of this role, the Development Manager will work collaboratively with all members of the Development Team to support the stewardship of regional relationships. This role is expected to have visibility in the community, attend and speak at stakeholder and networking events as a representative of UNICEF Canada, along with board members and UNICEF supporters and volunteers.
In addition, the Development Manager will work closely with other key areas within UNICEF Canada such as Operations, and Board relations, to support the goals of UNICEF Canada’s Strategic Plan.
The responsibilities of the position will include (but not limited to)
Revenue Generation (50%)
- Cultivate and solicit a portfolio of major donors, community partners and prospects in Western Canada with a focus on private foundations and holders of donor advised funds, including episodic, special events and emergency donors ensuring a continued and secure financial commitment to UNICEF.
- With support from the Director, Development (Major Gifts), oversee the moves management of a portfolio of prospects and donors giving up to $250,000 annually.
- Meet with prospects and donors in person regularly to cultivate support of UNICEF’s programs; support annual in person events for the purpose of stewardship and retention.
- Collaborate with the Prospect Researcher and other Relationship Managers to help build the Development pipeline through the identification, qualification and cultivation of prospects.
- Cultivate and solicit multi-year pledges and gift commitments to meet annual revenue targets annually and in support of long-term major gifts program development.
- Support revenue growth through strategic fundraising during campaigns, and by maximizing fundraising opportunities during emergencies.
- Actively attend community stakeholder events, donor engagement opportunities, including local convenings and gatherings of key supporters and stakeholders and other activities to build on networking opportunities for prospecting and cultivation.
- Collaborate with other Fundraising channels to execute strategies for revenue generation focused on the Development team’s priorities.
Volunteer Engagement and Relationship Management (40%)
- Support the Director of Development, Community in managing event volunteers and revenue and relationship activities that support event-based fundraising in Calgary.
- Work with volunteers and UNICEF colleagues to identify and engage top prospects for relationship development.
- Work with senior level volunteers, board members and UNICEF Canada leadership to foster positive, meaningful relationships with donors and prospects to UNICEF.
- Utilize reports, meetings and other tools provided to engage prospects and donors and provide timely and meaningful stewardship.
- Look for opportunities to engage UNICEF Canada program staff to support donor engagement, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship in person or virtually.
- Work with all other departments to support UNICEF Canada partners in the region to foster a sense of community and belonging among stakeholders and supporters.
- Support the development of appropriate marketing and engagement tools in collaboration with the Marketing and Communications teams.
Planning, Operations & Administration (10%)
- Support the Director, Major Gifts in the execution of relevant sections for the multi-year JSP and the Annual Operating Plan (AOP) toward revenue goals and operational priorities.
- Support the development and execution of organizational priority campaigns, targeted events, strategic engagement activities and initiatives.
- Maintain an up-to-date and deep knowledge of UNICEF’s work, leadership and projects for discussion with donors and prospects.
- Ensure that the Raiser’s Edge database and donor files are kept updated with accurate information on major donors and campaign prospects for ongoing reporting.
- Undertake travel for UNICEF and attend UNICEF fundraising events (sometimes during the evenings and weekends), as required.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A university degree or college diploma in a related discipline.
- Five (5) plus years of relevant work experience in fundraising, sales or account management in either the public or private sector.
- Exceptional relationship management skills.
- Able to travel domestically and internationally
- Experience tracking relationships and running reports with Raiser’s Edge database management.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking.
- Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office).
- A valid driver’s license with a vehicle, or access to vehicle.
- English/French bilingualism (an asset).
- The ability to communicate effectively in a collaborative environment.
- The ability to be strategic, detail-oriented, resourceful and cost efficient in order to drive new initiatives or enhance existing programming towards revenue growth.
Salary range: $63,500 to $77,500 per year.
