On National Child Day November 20 – also known worldwide as World Children’s Day – UNICEF Canada and decision-makers across the country open their doors to children and listen to what they have to say on issues that affect them. Kids Takeover is a global day of action ‘for children, by children’ to raise awareness for the millions of children around the world who’s rights are being denied.
Community Partners in Action
HIV prevention among adolescent girls and young women is one of the main priority areas of UNICEF’s HIV and AIDS programme. The urgent need to do better for this neglected yet vulnerable population is clear: Every hour, 30 adolescents between the ages of 15 and 19 are newly infected with HIV, and most of them are girls.
For a majority of people, HIV was equal to AIDS. Yet Yana Panfilova’s – an HIV positive teen activist – mother, who organized support groups for HIV-positive children, made her realize that HIV doesn’t kill. Ignorance does.
Partnership Opportunities
It’s not often we have the opportunity to discuss the power of partnership through technology and the support of women. Although, times are changing and Cisco along with UNICEF Canada are advancing the prospects of women globally through their commitment to help communities, economies and futures – one woman at a time.
Statement attributable to UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore
UNICEF regrets and condemns the reported loss of lives, including the deaths of teenagers, during recent demonstrations in Venezuela, and expresses its condolences to their families.
Over the past three years, the economic crisis in Venezuela has led hundreds of thousands of children and adolescents to leave the country with their families to migrate to other countries in the region, mostly to Peru and Colombia. They set out on the journey in difficult conditions and weary of the discrimination and xenophobia they might face in some places along the way.
